Making public buildings accessible to all

Working with the trustees of the North Memorial Hall in Tugby and the parish council, I recently submitted an application to Harborough District Council for a grant to provide improved access to the building.

The hall is a great local amenity, but in common with many buildings of the same age, access for people with disabilities was not high on the design agenda.

We are planning a block paving path from designated disabled parking bays to the entrance, clearly indicated.  Originally, people who used wheelchairs were expected to navigate a narrow path along the side of the building past gas bottles, and to access the hall through a goods intake door and a storage room!
