Billesdon Parish Council in Leicestershire meets this week, and will discuss the future of a community wildlife area based on a former POW camp which housed German and then Italian prisoners of war. History, the environment, wildlife, ecology and sustainability are all inter-connected here on land leased to the Parish Council by the County Council.
Next week, a wildlife pond on the site of the camp's former chapel will be dredged to remove silt and encourage wildlife.
It's future is not at risk, but the community group which has cared for the wildlife aspects of the site for many years, has closed. So now is the time to consider how best to preserve this site, its history and its significance for future generations.
