One of my major parish council projects in 2018 was a re-appraisal of traffic management in Kibworth, Leicestershire, with the help of residents, parish, district and county councillors, the aim being to engage cash-strapped Leicestershire County Council in positive discussions about possible improvements.
The existing village centre scheme of speed ramps and parking bays was drawn up in 2006. SInce then, over one thousand new homes have been built or approved, and car ownership has increased substantially.
Thirty-three different proposals have been placed on the County Hall 'table', ranging from more disabled parking bays, to changes in speed restrictions on the A6, more double-yellow lines, and greater enforcement.
A meeting was held with Leicestershire County Council on 9th January 2019 whch could be described as a 'full and frank discussion' but also good-natured with a genuine appreciation of the funding issues and challenges facing all local authorities. The Couty Council is compiling a detailed written response.
