The children in Year 6 at Billesdon Primary School wrote a letter to Billesdon Parish Council just before Christmas to say they were raising funds to buy lockers. They asked if the Parish Council could make a contribution, no matter how small.
Section 137 of the Local Government Act gives a parish council the power to fund something not within its remit, providing it is within limits set annually by the Government, based on the number of residents in a parish.
The parish council decided not to make a contribution - but to buy the lockers outright, and present them to the school.
The lockers arrived and were installed just a day before the end of the school term. Needless to say, children and teaching staff were delighted with their early Chrstmas present!
