Stephen Butt provides consultancy services to community groups and town and parish councils as a freelance Associate of Local Council Consultancy and an Affiliate Member of the Society of Local Council Clerks. He holds the Certificate in Local Council Administration from the Society of Local Council Clerks.
His background is in local council administration and broadcast journalism. His academic qualifications include a BA in Psychology from Durham University and an MA in Regional and Local History from Nottingham University.
Stephen has worked for parish councils of varying sizes, gaining hands-on experience of neighbourhood planning, cemetery management, community-managed libraries, community allotments and recreational facilities including play areas and outdoor adult fitness facilities.
He was a member of a BBC local radio management team, working as a Senior Broadcast Journalist and for several years managed the BBC Open Centre in Leicester. In 2009-2011, he joined the production team for Michael Wood's BBC series The Story of England and Great British Story.
Stephen has directed and produced short videos for Harborough District Council (on resilience planning and staff induction) and he is a former Honorary General Secretary of the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society.
Over the past three years, Leicester City Council has commissioned Stephen to provide research, text and images for heritage interpretation panels, and related material for its Story of Leicester website. He is also a member of the panel advising Harborough District Council on heritage assets.
His books are on social and community history themes, published by Amberley Publishing, Pen & Sword and the History Press.
